2013 is the sixth time Australia has hosted this multi-sport Festival utilising the venues and legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. At the London 2012 Olympic Games 106 athletes, over one-quarter of the Team, had competed at an edition of the AYOF. Olympic gold medallists of the past who came through the Festival include Anna Meares, Sally Pearson (McLellan), Matthew Mitcham, Emma Snowsill and many more.

Rugby sevens and golf will make their debut in an Olympic competition at the 2013 AYOF. The competing nations will have the chance to test out their wares as they begin the road to the senior Olympic debut at the Rio Games in 2016.
