Mattis wins all-around gold
GYMNASTICS: Great Britain’s Tyesha Mattis stole the show, proving she has exactly what it takes to be a future Olympian.
Her high-risk high-reward routines certainly paid off by not only winning gold for the all-around competition (54.832), but also taking home gold in the vault and bronze in both floor and bars.
“I’m really happy with myself I had some mistakes but I still tried my best in the other pieces to keep my score up so I’m really happy,” the 13-year-old said.
Mattis’s strongest performance was arguably her vault, where she scored an impressive 5.800 in difficulty totally in 14.766.
“I was quite happy with my vault; I got off my double Yurchenko and I wasn’t meant to but it happened and I just went for it and was really pleased,” Mattis said.
Following close behind her was compatriot Teal Grindle, who won silver in the all-around competition (54.065) as well as gold in the beam.
Grindle’s beam routine had everybody on the edge of their seats as they watched her effortlessly land all her jumps whilst showing her flair to the judging panel.
Furthermore, Great Britain’s Amy Tinkler had the audience cheering as she performed her floor routine.
Tinkler danced fluently around the floor, blending her flexibility, strength and dance moves into one entertaining show, so it came as no shock when she took home gold on floor. She then backed up with silver on the vault.
China’s Jie Mei was a consistently solid contender in the competition winning bronze in the all – around and beam and gold in bars.
Her teammate Zhilin Liu won bronze for the vault and came in second with her floor routine where she unfortunately received a deduction penalty of 0.300.
Alexandra Eade was Australia’s best gymnast, coming 5th in the all-around.
With ‘Gangnam Style’ dancing from the Australian gymnasts before the medal ceremony and nearly a full house, the final competition for gymnastics at the AYOF definitely ended with a bang!
