The triathlon sprint distance starts with a 750m lake swim, followed by a flat, fast 20km road cycle and ends with a 5km run. The competition also includes a team event where three athletes compete in a 300m swim, 8km cycle and 2km run.

Triathlon was first contested at the 2001 AYOF where a young Emma Snowsill won the gold medal. Seven years later, Snowsill won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Another AYOF participant Emma Jackson competed at the London 2012 Games.

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) are sending a development team to the 2013 AYOF as they did in 2009. The ITU team gives countries who have no high performance pathways a chance to develop young athletes and give them an opportunity to compete at an international level.
